“Island Earth” – Cyrus Sutton’s New Film About GMOs In Hawaii

Cyrus Sutton is well known for his crafty approach to surf travel and ability to creatively document it. One of his early efforts, Compassing, brought his viewers along as he outfitted a camper van and drove it through Mexico, capturing POV footage of fun looking surf along the way.

Since then, he’s helped launch a non-toxic sun screen, published articles in Surfer’s Journal about far flung surf expeditions to locations such as Russia, and won an Emmy Award for his work on a Fox Fuel TV story about supplying relief to victims of a tsunami.

His latest film, Island Earth, which just completed a tour through Australia and Hawaii, is set to start screening in California and the West Coast on Earth Day, 4/22/17. The new documentary investigates GMO food production, and its impacts on civilization. While Island Earth is a departure from Sutton’s focus on surfing, much of it is set in and devoted to Hawaii, one of the main focal points of surf culture. The film follows the stories of a few outstanding individuals, including Dustin Barca, a former competitor on the elite world tour who got involved in local government to affect change.

The screening tour includes stops in Santa Cruz at Sawyer Land + Sea Supply on April 25th, San Francisco at Roxie Theater on April 27th and Mill Valley at Proof Lab on May 2nd at 7:30. Click here to view a complete list of screening dates and locations.
