“Let Me Be It” – Conceptual Art By Nathaniel Russell

Flyers for events that don’t exist, fake books with intriguing titles, posters, record covers, skateboard graphics, murals, and music are a handful of the mediums Nathaniel Russell is known for. Let Me Be It, the upcoming show opening in July at Mollusk Surf Shop in San Francisco, will mainly feature prints and wood cut-outs.

The style Russell incorporates runs parallel to the themes he communicates. Hand written words, imperfect lines, and loosely sketched figures add a humanistic touch to conceptual expressions such as Promotional Posters For The Present Moment. The imagery in his work also seems to champion nostalgic acclaim for a less digitally saturated and complicated era. Small human figures staring up at the sun, or the universe, or a red and white rainbow suggest a reverence for existential pause and humility.

Originally from Indiana, Russell lived and worked on creative projects in the San Francisco Bay Area after college. He’s exhibited work in galleries around the world, and held solo shows in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Indianapolis, New York, and Tokyo. He’s painted murals for Facebook, Vans, Sutherland Labs – SF, and Artfence among others.

Watch the video below to learn more about his approach.

The opening reception for Let Me Be It happens Saturday, July 8th from 7 to 10pm
at Mollusk Surf Shop in San Francisco. There will be music, art on the walls, and good vibes permeating. Hopefully someone will be inspired to slap up some hand drawn flyers for this exhibit, and maybe a few for other shows that don’t actually exist.

Events posted on The Good Brine are subject to change. Please check directly with organizations and venues to confirm times and locations.
