San Diego Surf Film Festival Honors Skyp Frye

The San Diego Surf Film Festival is set to go off from May 10-13th, 2017. The event is a multi-faceted extravaganza, featuring 25 international surf films, a Skip Frye Lifetime Tribute, beach clean-ups, surfing expression sessions, art exhibitions, and a slideshow by renowned photo editor Grant Ellis.

The festival will be headquartered at Misfit Gallery in La Jolla and include happenings at Bird’s Surf Shed, and Fall Brewing Co. The films being presented vary in length, theme, intensity, and perspective. Mixed in with short and midlength videos are headliners like Fishpeople, Under An Arctic Sky, Red Chargers, Frio, and Great Highway. Below are a few trailers from some standouts.

Bezerke, is a short biography about Australian big wave phenom Russell Bierke, directed by Andrew Kaineder:

Frio, by Sequence Films and Relic Surf Shop, documents what happens when two friends challenge themselves to surf in an unfamiliar climate:

Great Highway, directed by Mark Gunson, centers on surf history in San Francisco:

While the film festival revolves around movies it also reaches well beyond the confines of a theater. Some community aspects incorporated into the festival are exhibitions of kids’ banner art at local businesses, group expression sessions and invitationals at Cardiff, an open invite to surf under the full moon at Scripps Pier, and a five kilometer beach run/clean-up. The “5K trash dash” beach run stretches from Hansen’s Surf Shop to Swami’s, and includes prizes for “most trash picked up” and “strangest finds.”
