“Women of Surfing: Art & History” Exhibition To Overlap With WSL Women’s Competition

The Huntington Beach Art Center is hosting a new exhibit titled Women of Surfing: Art & History in collaboration with the Surfing Heritage & Cultural Center. The show features artwork by women with close ties to the ocean, along with vintage surf equipment and historical documentation.

This exhibit will kick-off about a week before the WSL women’s championship tour brings some of the best female surfers to town for another round of elite competition. The Vans US Open Of Surfing at Huntington Beach is the sixth stop on the women’s tour and guaranteed to bring a giant audience to its shores. A massive influx of people is a bonus for curators, artists, athletes, or anyone else trying to shine a spotlight on women’s surf history and culture.

The show itself will include installations, paintings, historical accounts of iconic female surf pioneers, footage of early women’s surf competitions, jewelry made from sea glass, and displays of vintage surfboards. The unique perspective and diverse outlay of cultural paraphernalia are designed to complement each other. As Director of the Huntington Beach Art Center, stated in a press release, “From world champion athletes who also find creativity that flows from their relationship to the ocean, to those women who founded major movements on behalf of female surfers, and those who have documented the history and growth of the sport, this exhibition presents both an aesthetically beautiful and historically significant look at the world of women in surfing.”

Some of the women displaying work include Courtney Conlogue, Sachi Cunningham, Shannon Glasson, Blakeney Sanford, Nancy Tabeling, Heather Ritts Rapozo, and other nationally and internationally acclaimed artists.

According to its website, “The Huntington Beach Art Center is a community arts and cultural center serving Huntington Beach and the Southern California region. The Center presents the works of artists producing in all mediums, techniques, and genres. Through exhibitions, performances, film/video screenings, lectures and educational programming, HBAC serves to advance public awareness and understanding of cultural, historic, and contemporary perspectives.”

The show runs from July 22 – September 2, 2017 with an opening reception on July 22nd from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. The gallery is located at 538 Main Street, Huntington Beach, CA 92648.
