5 Futuristic Surf Mobiles

Surf vans are iconic. Surfers have been traveling and living in them for decades. From the vintage Volkswagen Bus and Ford Econoline, to customized Sprinters and conversion vans, there are no shortage of inspiring examples. The only downside to these beach-side apartments on wheels seems to be fuel efficiency. While they tend to guzzle gas like there’s no tomorrow, however, it doesn’t have to be that way. Below are 5 eco-friendly versions that prove fuel efficiency beach mobile options are likely in the future.

1. Volkswagen ID BUZZ

While the Volkswagen ID BUZZ is still in concept phase it will likely go into production and be made available by 2022. According to Car and Driver the goal is to outfit it with a battery charge range of 375 miles. Although this vehicle is a bit conceptish there is no doubt people will be frothing over it when the real version comes out.

2. Solar Powered RV

RV’s are rad. Crappy fuel efficiency isn’t. This one aims to make an impact on the unsustainable way cars are powered. While this rig is also in a conceptual phase its potential is massive. Imagine using energy from the sun to power your next road trip.

3. Electric Sprinter

The idea behind this van is to make delivering things more efficient through automation and electric power. Even though it’s designed to transport products it could easily be converted (like many Sprinters are currently) to a surf van. It’s just a matter of time until you see these at your local beach – hopefully without the robotic package organizing feature.

4. Nissan e-NV200

Again, this van is made for delivery. With its efficient design and battery powered capability, though, it would make a great low profile surf mobile. With a range of 174 miles per charge it’s worth taking a look at – or throwing some racks and boards on top of and hitting the road.

5. Convert Your Own

One of our favorite ideas is to take what is already in existence and convert it into a more sustainable ride. While not all of us are up to the task, it is cool to see what can be done with a little creativity, time, and effort. Check out the 1973 VW Van Brett and Kira Belan converted for inspiration.
