save the waves with Save The Waves’ smartphone app

Ocean based environmental degradation and destruction is at an all-time high. According to National Geographic “about 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans from coastal nations. That’s the equivalent of setting five garbage bags full of trash on every foot of coastline around the world.”

So, as surfers, what can we do to reduce the impact? Save the Waves, “an international nonprofit that works with like-minded organizations dedicated to protecting surf ecosystems” offers one way to get involved with their user friendly smartphone app. The app, which can be downloaded here, allows people to take pictures of threats to the ocean and pass info to local organizations that are poised to take action.

For a quick breakdown of how it works, watch the video below. But don’t stop there. Download the app, document what you see and initiate solutions.
