“It’s about realizing that clean beaches start at home” – Kahi Pacaro –
With a 2017 world champion and winner of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing about to be decided, the North Shore of Oahu is once again at the epicenter of the surf world. While the The Hawaiian Pro, Vans World Cup of Surfing, and the Billabong Pipe Masters (the three jewels of the triple crown) showcase the best competitive surfing on the planet, attention is also being focused on ocean health and sustainability.
In an effort to run the contests in an environmentally progressive way, WSL PURE is teaming up with Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, and Vans to keep things green. They’re making this happen in a few key ways. Waste diversion at the contest site involves collecting and separating trash, composting, and recycling. Refillable water stations set up at the venue help reduce the impact by preventing the dependency and spread of single use plastic water bottles. And finally, generators that run on locally grown plant based biofuels are used to power the event.
All of these methods along with an effort to educate the public and raise awareness about the environment are lifting the bar and setting an example for future beach side events world-wide. According to their website, “Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii is a grassroots, local nonprofit organization run by a small team of dedicated staff and supported by passionate volunteers, just like you. We inspire local communities to care for their coastlines through fun, hands-on beach cleanups. We also coordinate educational programs, a voluntourism program, waste diversion services, public awareness campaigns and help others run their own beach cleanups.” Go here to help strengthen the organization and support the cause.
